Burgers at Wright's Dairy in Staunton, VA
If you road trip or you're just interested in the "off the beaten path" food spots throughout the U.S., Michael Stern's book "Roadfood" is a must have. I did a lot of careful planning when it came to where we would stop and eat while on the road. We have absolutely no desire to stop at the local Hardy's or Chili's, so it's all about the road food.
Our first stop (which was suggested in "Roadfood") was Wright's Dairy-Rite in Staunton, VA. (Staunton, VA birthplace of Woodrow Wilson). http://www.dairy-rite.com/
My initial desire to stop at Wright's is the fact that it's a drive-in/eat in your car spot. Order at your little drive-up station, they bring you your food, you spill it all over your car while you watch the people sitting in the car in front of you eatting their burgers. You can also eat inside so whatever floats your boat.
Wright's offers a wide array of typical American fare - burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, shakes, etc. Ilya and I opted for the "Superburger". Wright's has been serving these burgers since 1952. Two patties with American cheese, lettuce, mayo and a tasty special sauce. All in all, we both thought it was a fine burger. I thought the bread could be a tad bit fresher but the burger itself was worth the less than 5 minute diversion off Route 81. Fries and shakes were good, too. It's definitely a great stop if you're headin' through these parts. Staunton is also a cute, little town with some small shops and Victorian homes.
I should have taken some pics before we
ate all of the food.
This is also Gizmo approved. He loved the burgers!
